Is it possible to intern in the U.S. on an E-2?

The E-2 is an investor visa: it authorizes work within the invested business, but does not function as an internship visa at outside companies or institutions. Understand the limits before accepting any new role.

The E-2 is an investor visa, not a student or training visa. It was designed for the investor and key employees of the invested enterprise to manage and operate that specific business. An internship unrelated to the company that supports the visa falls outside the purpose of the category.

In practice, interning at another institution or company with no connection to the business underlying the E-2 may be interpreted as unauthorized work. Activities outside the scope of the visa can create complications under immigration rules and may affect the visa holder’s status.

Some practical or learning activities may make sense when they occur within the invested company itself and as part of its operations. What does not fit the E-2 is using it as a pathway for internships or study at third-party organizations.

Because each case has its own particulars, it is worth confirming what is permitted with the official source (USCIS) and, if needed, reviewing your situation with a specialist before taking on any new activity.
