Moderate costs with housing pressure tied to tech growth

Home prices rose with the Silicon Slopes boom. Rents are competitive with Provo. Food and services are reasonable by American standards.

Orem is less expensive than central Salt Lake City, but has seen significant appreciation. Rent for a two-bedroom apartment near UVU or in central areas has increased. Home purchase prices have doubled in several neighborhoods over the past decade.

For those willing to consider areas further west or north, more affordable options remain. Markets such as Smith's, Macey's, Costco, and WinCo keep grocery costs in check. Dining at local chains (Cafe Rio, Costa Vida, Cafe Zupas, Sodalicious) is affordable.

Sales tax is around 7.5%. Utility bills are typical for Utah, with a gas usage peak in winter. The salary-to-cost ratio generally favors those working in tech in Lehi, Provo, or across Silicon Slopes.

Safe city by Utah Valley standards

Violent crime is very low. Property crime is moderate. Family neighborhoods are consistently quiet. LDS culture and strong family networks reinforce public safety.

Property crime exists, primarily in the form of parking lot theft at shopping areas (University Mall), occasional vehicle break-ins, and bike theft near UVU. All of this occurs at a scale well below comparable cities in other states.

Families report feeling comfortable letting children move freely in neighborhoods, near schools, and in parks. For immigrants, the sense of safety is frequently cited as one of the city's main advantages compared to larger metros or countries of origin.
