Hartford Demographics: Upper-Middle Class with Dartmouth Proximity
Approximately 11,000 residents, predominantly white, with a strong presence of professionals from the Dartmouth network (physicians, professors, researchers) and their families.
Hartford is predominantly white, as is Vermont as a whole. Unlike other rural towns, it has a higher median income due to the influence of Dartmouth College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital, which employ thousands in the Upper Valley region.
There is a small but established Indian and Asian community connected to physicians and researchers. International students from Dartmouth occasionally reside in Wilder. Hispanic residents are few.
Religion follows Upper Valley patterns: historic Protestantism (Congregational, Episcopal), Catholicism, and no religion as a growing category. There is also a regional synagogue (Kol Ha'emek Upper Valley) in Hanover.
